The Ariadne Interconnection is one of the most ambitious energy projects in Greece, generating significant economic and environmental benefits for all citizens.

Crete-Attica electrical Interconnection belongs in the list of the top 5 most innovative interconnection projects at European level, designed to enhance energy security and efficiency by linking Crete to the mainland’s electricity grid. As a crucial part of this groundbreaking infrastructure, A&G Powering Construction is proud to be at the forefront, delivering the electrical works that power the entire construction.

About the Ariadne Interconnection

The Ariadne Interconnection is a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission project developed to bridge Crete with Athens, ensuring a more reliable and sustainable power supply. It involves two submarine 500 kV cables, 335 km in length, of a total 1 MW transmission capacity, laid in record depths of up to 1,200 meters on the Aegean seabed. This project is of high importance for reducing Crete’s reliance on oil-based power generation and integrating renewable energy sources more effectively into the national grid.

A&G Role in the Project

At A&G Powering Construction we specialize in high-quality electrical infrastructure for large-scale energy projects; The Ariadne Interconnection is no exception.

Our Scope of work includes, both the installation of Advanced Electrical Systems, ensuring seamless transmission and distribution of power though state-of-the-art electrical installations, and also, the substation Electrical works, implementing critical electrical components to support the power transmission process. In the wide area of Aspropyrgos we built the first factory in Greece producing 1 MW of Electricity, transmitting through lignite units and photovoltaics, hosting the underwater oil-based power cable reaching Crete.

In Each Project our goal of adhering to the highest industry standards, to guarantee safe and efficient operation, remains unmissable; Conducting rigorous testing to ensure optimal performance before final activation.

Impact on Greece’s Energy Landscape

The new interconnection has a significant financial, social and environmental footprint. Financial, because when both electrical interconnections of Crete will be in operation, the country’s consumers will collectively save 550 million euros through their Public Utilities bills every year, an amount expected to gradually grow to 1 billion euros by 2030.

Social, because numerous jobs were created during the project’s construction. Environmental, because CO2 emissions will decrease by 500,000 tons, with no more pollutants from the island’s energy generation and the smokestacks of the local plants shutting down for good. The completion of the Ariadne Interconnection will revolutionize power distribution in Greece, making electricity supply more stable and cost-effective.

As the project completed, we take pride in our role in delivering energy solutions that matter, reinforcing our commitment to powering Greece’s future. We are excited about the opportunities this project brings and look forward to driving innovation, reliability and sustainability in the Energy sector for years to come.
